Game Preview: Scalebound

The most highly anticipated action role-playing game of 2017, "Scalebound," will be scheduled to release next year, exclusively for Xbox One.

The game was announced back at E3 2014 and showed a trailer that featured a character resembling Devil May Cry’s Dante wearing headphones and hanging out with a massive, fire-breathing dragon. The DMC inspiration does not stop at the main character Drew’s fashion sense: the hero can transform into a half-human, half-dragon form for increased strength and defense.

Gameplay

Scalebound should stand out, of course, because of Drew’s dragon companion named Thuban, who can breathe out fire and assist players throughout the game. For your enjoyment, you can hack and slash your enemies to bits in a whoop-your-butt style combat by using Drew’s “dragon arm.” It also allows him to scan enemies for information, unleash pulse energy, and heal his dragon companion. Drew’s companion will follow your orders, allowing you to send fiery blasts towards a group of enemies, and will take on other monsters in a head-to-head Godzilla battles.

In the game, you can use a variety of weapons to defeat enemies, and may issue commands to the dragon, which assists players during battles. Unlike other games developed by PlatinumGames, the game puts more focuses on graphical qualities and the role-playing aspect instead of action. In addition, players are equipped with melee weapons such as swords and ranged weapons like explosive arrows and guns. These weapons will eventually become degraded and lose their durability during combat.

Players can pick up different weapons throughout the game. As a result of the bond between the two, Thuban's death will cause Drew to die as well and vice versa. When encountering large enemies, players can swing to them and climb on them to perform attacks, so they can have the advantage over their enemies.

When Drew transforms, his abilities will significantly increase and becomes powerful. You can gain skill points, which can be used to level-up Drew, by defeating enemies and taking care of Thuban like healing and assisting him in battle. Additional skill points will be given if players can defeat multiple enemies consecutively. The game will also feature a four-player co-operative multiplayer mode for the player’s enjoyment.
