Game Preview: We Happy Few

The most delusional, happy-obsessed survival game of the summer, “We Happy Few,” will give a great deal of suspense and thrill. The game is scheduled to be released next month in June and will be available for Xbox One, OS X, Linux, Microsoft Windows and Steam.

Official Trailer

"From the independent studio that brought you Contrast, We Happy Few is an action/adventure game set in a drug-fueled, retro futuristic city in an alternative 1960's England. Hide, fight and conform your way out of this delusional, happiness-obsessed world" – game description.

We Happy Few” is set in a retro-futuristic dystopia Wellington Wells, England in the year 1964 after an alternate-history World War II. In the game's version, Germany successfully commenced Operation Sealion and invaded England. To thwart the invasion, the citizens of Wellington Wells instigated an incident (referred to only as "A Very Bad Thing") that, while it drove the Nazis out of England, was so horrible that Wellington Wells was stricken with guilt; to cope and prevent their guilt from collapsing their society, the city has resorted to taking dosages of Joy pills, a drug that makes the citizens forget about everything bad that has ever happened to them, including the "Very Bad Thing."

Gameplay Walkthroughs Part 1 - 3

In the game, the player will play as a Downer, or someone who chooses not to take Joy pills. In Wellington Wells, Downers are not only frowned upon, but actively attacked if spotted and identified, and forced to ingest Joy until they are one of the many again. The Downer's goal is to escape the city by finding a hatchway that leads out, while avoiding suspicion from Joy-crazed citizens and obtaining food and water to survive. The Downer must be careful, however; stealing food and water from homes may raise suspicion, and if the Downer's suspicion level goes to high, the citizens or even the police may actively chase and attempt to subdue the Downer, and get them to fit back into society with any means necessary, including brute force. The Downer can blend in with the citizens for short amounts of time, by taking small dosages of Joy, but taking too much can cause the Downer to forget their mission completely, and become just another eternally smiling face of We Happy Few.

Hopefully before this game comes out, I can play it and review the whole game so far. If you want to know how to play “We Happy Few,” you can check out the three walkthrough videos above so you can know what to expect.
